How to Keep Your Kids Busy While You Study as a Mom

Let’s be real: studying as a mom is a juggling act of epic proportions. Just when you sit down to tackle a chapter, someone needs a snack, a toy, or a hug. (Sometimes all three!) But don’t worry, you’re not alone in this, and I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping the chaos at bay while hitting the books.

The secret? Finding activities that engage your kids while you sneak in some focused study time. Here’s what’s worked for me, and hopefully, it’ll help you too.

1. Crafting Their Way to Calm

I’ve discovered that kids + craft supplies = a precious window of quiet. I keep a stash of goodies like markers, stickers, and glue sticks at the ready. One of our go-to activities is a “make something for someone” challenge. Whether it’s a card for grandma or a spaceship drawing, they love the purpose behind it and I love the peace.

Pro Tip: A plastic tablecloth under the craft area works wonders for quick cleanup!

2. Busy Bags: A Lifesaver

Have you heard of busy bags? They’re magical. I fill little zippered pouches with puzzles, lacing cards, and magnetic shapes. Whenever I need some uninterrupted time, out comes the busy bag. The best part? Rotating what’s inside keeps it exciting, and I can actually get through a few paragraphs without interruptions.

3. Audiobooks Are a Game-Changer

Audiobooks have been a game-changer in our house. I’ll set my little one up with a comfy blanket, a snack, and a good story while I tackle my own reading. The look on their face as they get lost in the story is priceless and I get to feel like a rockstar mom and student at the same time.

Here’s what we’ve been listening to lately:

  • For little ones: The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • For preschoolers: Dragons Love Tacos
  • For older kids: The Magic Treehouse series

4. Let’s Build a Fort

When I need to study but also want to be “fun mom,” we build a fort together. With some pillows, blankets, and a flashlight, they’ve got a cozy hideout to play in while I hit the books. Sometimes, they even grab a book themselves and join in on the “quiet reading time.”

5. The Beloved Scavenger Hunt

One of my last-minute lifesavers is the scavenger hunt. I’ll write down a quick list of items for them to find around the house “something green,” “a toy with wheels,” “a spoon” and they’re off on their own adventure while I squeeze in some study time. It’s easy, fun, and keeps them moving!

6. The Quiet Time Box

I’ll be honest: some days are harder than others. That’s where the Quiet Time Box comes in. I fill it with calming activities like sensory bottles, quiet books, and a small stuffed animal. It’s our “this is really important study time for mommy” backup plan, and it works like a charm.

A Little Routine Goes a Long Way

The biggest thing I’ve learned is to make study time part of our family routine. I explain to my kids that when mommy is working on school, it’s their time to play or explore something fun. At first, it felt impossible, but now they actually look forward to it. (And I’ve stopped feeling guilty for taking time for myself.)

Why This Matters

Here’s the thing: when you study as a mom, you’re not just learning for yourself, you’re showing your kids what dedication looks like. They see you setting goals, working hard, and making time for what’s important. And honestly? That’s one of the best lessons we can teach them.

So, mama, grab a busy bag, turn on an audiobook, or build a fort. You’ve got this. One chapter, one goal, one day at a time.
